Grackles usually begin showing up here in late February and this year was no exception. They, along with red-winged blackbirds, are a good indicator that warm weather is getting close. Robins generally get the credit for announcing the arrival of spring, but grackles and blackbirds perform the job quite well. The grackles will breed, nest, and raise their young here before disappearing again in late summer.
